At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, ABT released its latest packages for Audi A6 and R8. Here we take a look at the tuned sedan, which gets upgraded TDI and TFSI engines and some visual tweaks.

ABT provides you with good power packages whether you go for the diesel or petrol engines. For the 3.0 liter TDI they offer a high-torque and cultivated 282 HP (207 kW) instead of the series standard 245 HP (180 kW) as base. If you want more you should go for the S package that has 310 HP (228 kW) plus 610 Nm of torque.

Petrol powered V6 will enjoy a full 410 HP or 302 kW instead of the standard’s 300 HP / 221 kW.

At the Geneva Motor Show this coming March, Audi will pull the curtain back to reveal its new A1 compact model. While Europeans will have the option of purchasing the car afterwards, Americans will have no such luxury as Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen feels the American market is not yet ripe for such a vehicle; he feels that that such a move will damage efforts to build brand recognition and compete head-to-head with BMW and Mercedes-Benz. After spending a week with the 2010 Audi S4, we can say with confidence that Audi is fast on its way to becoming a substantial player in the game that is currently dominated by BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

We already established the Volkswagen Golf is a good choice for fuel economy and we also pointed out the best method for increasing efficiency is through weight loss with the Mazda2. It makes sense to include the Golf’s lighter aluminum cousin, the Audi TTS. Not only is it an incredible performance car, but it happens to be one of the most efficient as well.
Take the floor pan from the Golf, slice off the front end, and replace it with aluminum components and you have the basis for the TTS. Now take the already potent turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter I-4 out of the GTI and slap on a bigger turbo and intercooler for a grand total of 265 horsepower, then channel it through an S tronic twin-clutch transmission (with launch control!) driving all four wheels and you have a recipe for efficient performance. While 29 highway mpg is nowhere near diesel numbers, it’s pretty impressive for a car that does 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Just shortly after the official launch H&R can already offer a sports suspension set for the 525 PS Audi R8 V10 Spyder. Audi has provided its super open-topped car with a whole portfolio of technical support, from the legendary quattro four-wheel drive to the newly developed sports suspension with electronic steering. H&R Spezialfedern has developed a sports suspension set exactly for this, which can improve the sporty characteristics of the ten cylinder vehicle – without perceptibly reducing the driving comfort. In addition a 20mm lowering suits this fast open Audi very well. The imposing mid-engine sportscar thus appears more compact and powerful. For even more agile handling the suspension specialists from Lennestadt are offering an aluminum coil over kit with which the height and damping force can be individually adjusted within of the values approved by the Technical Inspection Authority (TÜV).

The German-based Audi cars enhancement expert Senner Tuning has unveiled its latest program, which lends the 2009 Audi S5 Sportback more athletic stance and styling as well as boosted output figures.

Although the S5 Sportback represents a premium, all-rounded mid-size vehicle with sufficient performance, the guys at Senner have decided to give the ride an extra kick. Thanks to the optimization of the ECU and a new sport air filter, the S5’s 3.0-litre TFSI engine is now capable to deliver the staggering 375 horsepower and 495 Nm instead of the factory 333 horses and 440 Nm of peak torque. In addition to the new output level, Senner has also mounted the ride with a brand-new in-house exhaust unit with catalytic converter and four end-pipes.

For the sportier stance, the Senner S5 Sportback benefits from a 35/40 mm lowering springs and a gorgeous 20-inch set of two-piece alloys in T1S Work VARA Diamont black design. The new rims are fitted with high-performance tires in the dimensions 245/30 R20 at the front and 295/25 R20 at the rear axle.

Upon a customer demand, the interior of the Senner S5 can be further reinforced with carbon fiber accents and gadgets.

Although Audi’s 2011 A8 is no slouch and far from being unattractive, it hasn’t stopped German tuning guru’s ABT trying to improve an already excellent package. With ABT releasing pictures and specifications we can now see how to make a good car better.

ABT chose the popular 4.2-litre TDI V8 model as their base for the conversion. Even though in standard trim the A8 Diesel manages to push out a very respectable 350 horsepower, with 590 pound-feet of torque, ABT decided that this wasn’t enough. To turn the luxury cruiser into a more sporty option the tuners have squeezed out an extra 35 hp bringing it up to 385, whilst boosting the torque figure to 649 lb-ft. While we can assume that the top speed could exceed the normal limitations on 155 mph, the 0-60 time has been dropped to five seconds flat.

Of course having this extra power is nothing if you cant shout about it, and ABT realise this by kitting out the AS8 with a new front spoiler and deep splitter, chunkier side skirts and a sculpted rear apron that incorporates the new tail pipes. To add to this a boot spoiler overlooks the rear and ABT’s own design CR 21-inch alloys keep the car rolling down the road.

Autonomous Audi TT-S Receives Retro Color Scheme

Touted as a modern take on the Pikes Peak-competing Sport Quattro S1 rally car of the 1980s, the special TT-S has been adorned with the same red, gray, and black stripes of yore. Unlike the 80s, however, an advanced assembly of electronic controls will help propel the TT-S on the route it needs to travel. From 1985-1987, Michele Mouton, Bobby Unser, and Walter Röhrl claimed victories at Pikes Peak with the original Quattro, and if the autonomous TT-S can reel in a time even remotely close to the three rally drivers (Röhrl finished in 10 minutes and 47 seconds in 1987), you can consider us impressed.

Dubbed Shelley, after 1985 Pikes Peak winner Mouton, the TT-S will continue testing before hitting the mountains for its special event in September. Assuming Shelley stays on course, it would be the first vehicle of its kind to clear the 12.4-mile, 156-turn ascent to the 14,110-foot peak.

I don’t often test out big hulking S.U.V.’s, not because I believe that they’re grotesque and emblematic of everything that’s wrong with the auto industry, or because I already own a vintage, 38-year-old gas-guzzling proto-utility vehicle of my own, but because they’re generally not that fun to drive and thus don’t fit very well into my prissy/sporty aesthetic. They’re overweight where I prefer sinewy, wallowy where I prefer taut, and plodding where I prefer athletic. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be satisfying to drive, particularly when an appropriate need arises (or when you just want to compensate for feelings of emasculation/inadequacy). That need came up this week when our good friends from Chicago visited us upstate with their adorable one year-old. And by “need,” I mean transporting the landfill worth of apparel, accessories, accoutrements, and apparatuses people seem to think is necessary for the practice of contemporary parenting. It was amazing that they were able to fit all their shit on a commercial airliner. “If we’d brought even one more thing,” our friend said, as I helped him drag a pair of wheelbarrow-sized wheelie bags across the commuter rail parking lot, “we’d have had to hire a Sherpa.” But amazingly enough, the sea-gray Audi Q7 I’d borrowed for their visit was able to swallow their huge load with the esophagal avidity of one of the guys from Oral Exams 4.

ABT AS8 Based On 2011 Audi A8

German tuner ABT has already come up with their own version of the hot out of the oven 2011 Audi A8. It’s based on the4.2 TDi version and as usual it’s called the AS8. The looks of Audi’s flagship saloon has been discretely modified with a front spoiler, side sills, a rear apron with new tailpipes and rear spoiler.

Also contributing to the looks are the tuner’s CR alloys available in 20 and 21-inch sizes, and the magnificent phantom-black coating. As for the power, ABT has lightly modified the 4.2 liter diesel unit of the A8, which in standard form has 350 hp and 800 Nm of torque, and gave it a bump in power up to 385 hp and 880 Nm of torque. Audi equipped a test vehicle with forward-looking, 3D-imaging sensors, a processing unit that identifies traffic situations, and affixed internal cameras that keep an eye on the driver in an effort to develop next-generation active pedestrian and cyclists safety and crash-avoidance technology.

As part of the German Adaptive and Cooperative Technologies for Intelligent Traffic (AKTIV) consortium, Audi is participating in a three-pronged program consisting of Safety for Pedestrians and Cyclists, Active Emergency Braking, and Driving Safety and Attentiveness, which aims to use advanced automotive technology and communication to reduce traffic accidents.

Exterior design

Can you smell the irony here? After using an American A-list celebrity -raise your hand, Justin Timberlake - to promote their new premium hatchback, reports out of Ingolstadt are saying that the A1, for one reason or another, will not be brought to the U.S. market.

Audi already mentioned this a few months ago when global sales head Peter Schwarzenbauer say that the brand isn’t that well established in the US to be selling small vehicles like the A1, given also the fact the U.S. customers are more inclined into buying larger vehicles. Recently, Audi reiterated their stance when Schwarzenbauer, in an interview with Automotive News, said "If you look at the real numbers [MINI and Smart sales in the US], it’s not huge volumes. I’m not so sure yet we really see a trend to small cars in the United States."

With European sales of the Audi set to kick off later this year at a price of €15,800 ($19,382) for the 1.2-liter TFSI engine base model, Audi is skeptical that the A1 would generate significant sales - at least for Audi to make even a marginal profit - in the U.S. market.

American Audi A1 Still in Doubt

Audi really hopes that the freshly-revealed A1 will be a massive hit when it will go on sale this summer but contrary to what many might expect, the new small car won't be sold in the United States. At least, this is what company insiders familiar with the matter are claiming, although there are several things that indicate an American A1 is still possible. But first things first.

The A1 was initially believed to help Audi step into the US small class segment and the fact that the Germans used Justin Timberlake to promote the car might be a sign that such a thing is indeed possible. On the other hand, Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi's global sales and marketing boss, told Autonews in March that Audi's small cars won't be sold in the US for the time being, indicating that a potential launch of the A1 might be possible, but only at a later date.

This is the 2011 Audi TT. It looks the same, it steers the same and it sticks the same. But there's one major difference: torque. Audi has managed to coax an additional 51 pound-feet of twist from its ever-evolving 2.0-liter TFSI four cylinder. The result? Audi’s hottest hatch ever is almost ready and we have the best pictures yet of how the brand-new RS3 flagship will look.

Spied testing at the famous Nurburgring race circuit in Germany, the mule captured in the pictures is wearing an S3 Sportback shell, but don’t let this fool you, underneath, the RS version is a different beast altogether.

As well as Audi’s trademark Quattro four-wheel-drive system, it is expected that the RS3 will get a modified version of the same 2.5-litre, five-cylinder turbocharged engine found in the TT RS. As a result the RS3 will have no shortage of power, with over 330bhp and 450Nm of torque. The result of this will be a 0-60mph time of less than five seconds.

Mated to an S-tronic gearbox, the RS3 will also get a host of exterior additions over the S3, including a body kit, bonnet air-intakes and twin exhausts.

Compact cars that are premium rather than second-rate, that is. Compacts admired for elegant, tailored looks as well as exceptional fuel efficiency. Luxury automobiles, yet distinctly athletic in character.

Today's Audi A3 TDI fits the description tidily.

Yesterday's Cimarron was compact, otherwise none of the above applied. It was an overdressed, over-priced version of the Chevrolet Cavalier peddled as a Cadillac through the mid-1980s to the detriment of the brand and to any subsequent compact that aspired to anything worthwhile.

The earlier successes of the BMW 320, Audi 4000 and Saab 900 among others inspired Cadillac's failed experiment. It may not have been coincidence that successive models of these European imports grew ever larger.

Who knows how many North Americans decided on the basis of having seen, heard, or even worse drove, a Cadillac Cimarron that no compact-sized car could ever merit a luxury price?

We'll soon find out, in any event, how many drivers are willing to rethink the matter as new fuel-efficiency standards beginning in 2012 surely will herald another wave of smaller vehicles.

The Acura CRX, BMW 135i, Mercedes-Benz B200 and Volvo S40, as well as the regular Audi A3, are current examples of luxury compacts. The A3 TDI moves a step beyond them in fuel efficiency. As the 2010 Green Car of The Year, this diesel-powered model (TDI stands for turbo direct-injection diesel) provides a model for every major manufacturer's product planning.

This newest, lightweight model – likely carrying either a ClubSport (CS) or GT badge – has been undergoing testing in Germany this week, and beyond the sinister matte-black paint scheme (with matching fuel door), there are a few choice modifications to the body to set it apart from its standard siblings.

The front fascia has been lowered slightly with the addition of a new splitter and reshaped winglets, while out back you'll notice the larger, round exhaust outlets, restyled rear bumper with new air outlets aft of the wheels and that shapely fixed rear wing. The rolling stock appears to have grown a bit and larger carbon ceramic brakes are fitted at all four corners.

The Audi A8 is a large car by most people's standards, but the A8 L, which makes its world debut at the Beijing Show, is larger still.

Compared with the standard A8, it's more than five inches longer, and all that extra room is devoted to the rear passengers, who also get heated seats, individual climate control air-conditioning and rear and side window blinds.

The A8 L comes with a choice of four engines. The three most familiar are 247bhp 3.0 and 345bhp 4.2 TDI turbo diesels and a 367bhp 4.2 FSI petrol. Above them all is a new version of the Volkswagen Group's W12 (basically two V6s joined together, and introduced several years ago in the Volkswagen Phaeton). This has now been extended from six to 6.3 litres and produces a maximum of 493bhp, giving the A8 L a remarkable 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds, with top speed limited to 155mph. Combined fuel economy has also improved, to 23.5mpg, and the CO2 rating is 278g/km.

The W12 is not available in the standard A8, and A8 L customers who choose it also get two individual rear seats which can be heated, ventilated, slid forwards and backwards and reclined to suit the occupants.

Audi has unveiled details of its new range-topping model, the 2011 Audi A8 L sedan. Basically the long wheelbase version of the top end Audi A8 sedan, this car is expected in the U.S. market in the coming months.

Since the major difference of this car from the others is in terms of its body proportions, here are the details of it. The car is is 5,267 millimeters (17.28 ft) in length, a good 130 mm (5.1 in) longer than other models. The wheelbase is 3,122 mm (10.24 ft) and there is a 2 mm (0.08 in) increase in the height of this car. Width remains the same though at 1949 mm.

The vehicle is powered by a 247 kg 6.3-liter W12 engine that delivers 373 kW and 625 Nm of torque. The 0 to 100 kilometer per hour target can be achieved in 4.9 seconds. Top speed is an impressive 250 km/hr. Owing to its Audi Space Frame aluminum body, Audi claims that this car is 40 percent lighter than a car with a similar steel body.

The latest iteration of the sweet engine delivers 450 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and, between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm, transmits a maximum of 317.15 pound-feet of torque.

It's a while since I've had an Audi of any sort sitting outside the house, and I must admit there is something rather uplifting about it. I wouldn't go so far as to say that Audi is my favourite manufacturer above all others, but opening the front door and finding an Audi sitting there is somehow different - in an entirely positive way - from opening the front door and not finding an Audi sitting there.

This is not because Audis look dramatic. On the contrary, their designs are very restrained - the A5 Cabriolet which I promise I'll get round to talking about very soon whispers rather than declaims its status, which I find rather satisfying. And Audis which have not been ruined by having low-profile tyres fitted to them are generally very pleasant to drive, even if they happen not to be especially quick.

That last point is particularly relevant to the open-topped version of the A5. Last year I drove the 2.0 TFSI petrol turbo version, and in a subsequent road test questioned the advisability of fitting a 208bhp engine to a car which, unless it had four-wheel drive, did not seem able to take it. The 2.0 TDI turbo diesel reviewed here has 40bhp less, and a similar question arises. 168bhp is still on the high side for an A5 Cabriolet which drives only through the front wheels.

Nothing particularly dangerous or alarming happens if you start pushing hard, but it doesn't take long to take the car well away from its comfort zone. Both the ride and the handling deteriorate quickly, and you soon learn to take things easy.

That doesn't mean you necessarily have to dawdle. The Volkswagen Group's 2.0 TDI engine is one of the best in the business, and it develops enough power for relaxed but purposeful driving without any great effort on the part of the driver (far more so than the 2.0 TFSI does, certainly). I can quite imagine that you could buy an A5 Cabriolet of this type now and sell it in two or three years' time without ever having used more than an inch of the accelerator pedal travel, and not once consider it to be a slow car.

Other features of the car have been dealt with before but may as well be mentioned again here. Although it has four seats, it is quite out of the question to fit four adults into them, though I doubt that many Cabriolet owners would ever be minded to try. The roof - only a fabric job, following Audi tradition, but a high-quality one at that - does a fine job of keeping extraneous noise out of the cabin when it's in place, and when it's folded down there is a fresh-air feeling which does not extend to an impression that you are experiencing a hurricane (unless of course you actually are). Less happily, the footrest is placed so far away that even I, an unnecessarily tall person, find it hard to reach, a problem common to all A5s and indeed the A4s on which they are based.

Unbridled power lurking in a classically elegant coupe: the Audi RS5 will debut at the Geneva Auto Show. The high-revving 4.2-liter V8 with its 331 kW (450 hp) unleashes powerful performance while achieving remarkable fuel economy. The seven-speed S tronic and an innovative center differential in the quattro drivetrain transmit power to all four wheels.

Developed by quattro GmbH, the RS models comprise the dynamic spearhead of Audi‘s model range. The Audi RS5 is the latest torchbearer in a tradition dating back over 15 years to the RS 2 Avant: superior handling in the mid-size class.

A close relative of the V10 which powers the high-performance R8 sports car, the high-revving V8 engine delivers its output from a displacement of 4,163 cm3. Like nearly every Audi gasoline engine, this one also operates via direct fuel injection known by the abbreviation FSI. This same technology has propelled the Audi R8 racing car to four triumphs at the classic endurance race in Le Mans. The common-rail system generates up to 120 bars of pressure.

Intensive fine-tuning of the dual-branch intake and exhaust system allows the undersquare engine to breathe freely; four adjustable camshafts and tumble flaps in the intake manifold facilitate mixture formation. The 4.2 FSI provides imposing torque and is right at home even at high revs – almost like a race engine. The engine delivers 331 kW (450 hp) at 8,250 rpm and – between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm - transmits a maximum of 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft) of torque.

The vigorous strength, the spontaneous responsiveness, the joyful high-revving, and the throaty, sonorous music: this V8 produced by hand at Audi stunningly combines the essence of power and emotion. The 4.2 FSI propels the coupé’s 1,725 kilograms (3,802.97 pounds) in 4.6 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62.14 mph) to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). Audi can increase that to 280 km/h (173.98 mph) upon request.

Impressive efficiency: just 10.8 liters of fuel per 100 km

Efficiency is standard in every Audi; the Audi RS5 is no exception. The ultra-powerful eight-cylinder engine averages 10.8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (21.78 miles US mpg) - far less than its main competitors. This impressive figure is due in part to the technologies from the Audi modular efficiency platform. The engine and the entire drivetrain have been optimized to minimize friction, the oil pump operates on demand, and an energy-recovery system conserves energy during coasting and braking.

The standard seven-speed S tronic in the Audi RS5 – with its high efficiency ratio and its high-geared top speed – also enhances efficiency. It consists of two clutches and two subsidiary transmissions. Both subsidiary transmissions are continuously active, but only one is powered at any given time by the engine. Gears are alternately shifted by the two clutches – at lightning speed, smoothly, and almost imperceptibly.

The seven-speed S tronic, which was specially reinforced to accommodate the high-revving V8, can operate in fully automatic mode – or the driver can shift via the innovative selector lever or shift paddles on the steering wheel. By means of the standard Audi drive select, the driver can switch in automatic mode among three different options: auto, comfort, and dynamic. In the launch control program, the seven-speed S tronic ensures flawless acceleration from a standstill – at full power and with minimal tire slip.

New quattro technology: the crown-gear differential

Like all RS models, the Audi RS5 also applies its power to the road with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. As for the center differential, which regulates power distribution between the front and rear axles, Audi – the leading all-wheel-drive brand – unveils the next generation: a crown-gear differential.

The self-locking crown-gear center differential is compact and lightweight – and attains a high efficiency ratio.

Thanks to its package of plates, the differential can widely vary the distribution of torque between the front and rear axles. If necessary, up to 70 percent can flow to the front or as much as 85 percent toward the tail end. The 40:60 ratio of the standard rear-biased configuration ensures sporty handling.

This new differential operates in conjunction with electronic torque vectoring, which affects all four wheels. If one of the inside wheels becomes imbalanced while the vehicle is at its operational limits, then the system slightly decelerates the wheel to obviate wheel spin. This results in terrific traction on the one hand while generating a yaw moment which aids cornering.

As a perfect complement to the new quattro drivetrain, Audi can optionally position the sport differential at the rear axle. It actively distributes torque between the rear wheels in order to further boost stability and grip at the vehicle’s limits of handling. The electronic management of the Audi RS5 sport differential was designed to be uncompromisingly dynamic.

With regard to the springs, shock absorbers, elastokinematics, and the anti-roll bars, the Audi RS5 chassis exhibits a sporty configuration and renders the body 20 millimeters (0.79 inches) lower than that of the Audi A5. The 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with 265/35 tires are standard. They are executed in an exclusive 5-arm structure design. The Audi RS5 optionally comes with 20-inch wheels and 275/30 tires. Winter wheels featuring the same dimensions are available; the 19-inch wheel is suitable for snow chains.

The brake system employs powerful and internally ventilated discs, which measure 365 millimeters (14.37 inches) in diameter at the front axle. In order to maximize the dissipation of heat, the steel friction rings are perforated and connected by pins to the aluminum brake discs. The high-gloss black brake calipers bearing RS logos are likewise made of aluminum; the front calipers are fitted with eight pistons each. Audi can optionally fit the front axle with ceramic carbon-fiber brake discs measuring 380 millimeters (14.96 inches) in diameter. They are extremely lightweight, strong, and durable. The electronic stabilization program (ESP) integrates a sport mode and can be switched off entirely.

Even more dynamics: Audi drive select

The speed-dependent servotronic steering in the Audi RS5 is especially taut. The standard Audi drive select (a vehicle-dynamics control system) allows the driver to switch among three modes of operation – comfort, auto, and dynamic – to adjust steering, the seven-speed S tronic, the sport differential, the engine, and the exhaust system. And if the car is equipped with the MMI navigation system, a fourth mode allows the driver to customize their own profile.

As regards the engine, Audi drive select controls the exhaust system’s two throttle valves and the sound flaps; when they open, the rich sound becomes even more resonant. Along with the sport differential, dynamic steering is another optional component of Audi drive select. Dynamic steering adjusts the steering ratio to a vehicle’s speed – directly for maneuvering at low speeds and indirectly for traveling at highway speeds. At the vehicle’s cornering limits, it automatically ensures smooth handling via minor corrective actions.

The Audi RS5 exudes an athletic and powerful identity; its classically beautiful coupé styling dazzles with new and clear-cut accents. Its single-frame grille bears a shiny charcoal-gray rhombus-pattern grid. Xenon plus headlights boasting a sweeping strip of LED daytime running lights are standard. The oversized air inlets for the engine, front brakes, and the radiators are bordered by striking contours. The newly designed bumper tapers downward into a splitter.

The flared fenders with the crisp horizontal upper edges are reminiscent of a classic Audi: namely, the all-wheel-drive pioneer Audi quattro, which itself debuted at the Geneva Auto Show 30 years ago. The side sills bear angular caps; the trim strips on the single-frame grille and near the side windows as well as the outside mirrors’ covers feature a matt aluminum look. Eight different paint finishes are available.

The tail end is dominated by two oval exhaust pipes integrated within the bumper. A large diffuser protrudes prominently upward. The spoiler in the tailgate automatically extends at a speed of 120 km/h (74.56 mph) and retracts at 80 km/h (49.71 mph).

The extensively clad underbody of the Audi RS5 integrates air vents for the seven-speed S tronic and the front brakes. At highway speeds, the aerodynamic characteristics of the Audi RS5 generate downforce to further enhance stability.

Dynamic elegance: the interior

The vehicle’s dynamically elegant styling extends to the interior. Sports seats with pronounced side sections and integrated head restraints are standard. They are electrically adjustable and feature a leather/Alcantara combination. Alternatives include bucket seats with more prominent contours and folding backrests or ventilated and luxuriously upholstered climate-controlled comfort seats.

The steering wheel has a substantial rim and is covered with perforated leather. The instruments have black gauges and white lettering with distinctive scaling. When the ignition is switched on, the red needles briefly rise high and then drop back down. The driver information system integrates a lap timer for recording circuit times and an oil-temperature gauge. Just like the optional MMI navigation systems’ monitor, it displays an RS greeting upon ignition.

The interior is black and the decorative inlays are made of carbon fiber. A fascia in the instrument panel features a piano finish. The pedals, the footrests, and the optional MMI navigation systems’ control buttons gleam thanks to their aluminum look. Moreover, the door handles consist of two slim strips – typical of Audi RS models. Aluminum inserts adorn the door sill trims and Audi RS5 logos lend dynamic highlights to the interior.

Upon request, truly exclusive features such as decorative inlays with a dark, stainless-steel mesh look, a black piano finish or brushed aluminum are available. Or seat upholstery featuring special leathers and colors as well as silver headlining. In addition, the Audi exclusive RS program offers options such as suede-covered controls and floor mats bearing Audi RS5 logos.

A Carbon design package is available for the engine compartment and, for the vehicle body, there are styling packages in black or matt aluminum look. And the acoustically bold Sport exhaust system – also with a sound flap – has black tailpipe trims.

Sales of the Audi RS5 will begin in the spring. Its basic price will be approximately 77,700 euros.

The sport package. And those sexy LED daytime running lights. That's why you buy an Audi A3 over a run-of-the-mill compact sedan or hatchback. Balance is why you buy an A3 TDI diesel over a hybrid.

Balance, of course, can refer to things other than limited weight distribution and handling. In this case, we're talking about the tradeoff between performance and fuel economy. As fuel economy requirements continue to tighten, this balance becomes all the more important. Sure, you could get even better fuel economy with a hybrid, but it won't have the same pizzazz as the A3 TDI. Skeptical? Don't be. Audi says that diesel models account for half of all A3 sales.

If you're familiar with the A3 at all, you probably know it is Audi's entry-level car and available as a hatchback only. We're often asked if it's worth the price considering its size, which is small by American standards. Car companies that believe they must tune transmissions to shift somewhat unresponsively to get good fuel economy should run the A3 TDI around their test tracks, then try to develop something as good as the six-speed S Tronic — a dual-clutch, automatically shifted manual. Those are growing in popularity because they are more fuel-efficient than most automatics or even conventional manuals.

The only tiny wrinkle might be a moment's hesitation when floored from a standstill. So, gold medal for the drivetrain.

Now, what about those gripes? Noises, mainly. And Audi portrayed most of them as unique to the test car, saying it isn't getting similar complaints from owners or other test drivers.

It's every bit as quiet as a folding hardtop convertible and you don't have to give up the entire trunk to retract the top. Aside from the potential security issues a soft top entails, why in the world would anyone choose an A5 coupe over the cabrio? I'd opt for the coupe if I were thinking of an S5, though.

Just when you thought Audi couldn’t do any worse, the VW-owned German manufacturer is now planning to release a subcompact hatchback called the Audi A1 Sportback. Currently only shown in concept form at the 2008 Paris Auto Show, the A1 wants to take aim at the Mini, but will most likely become known as an overpriced Yaris competitor.

Geeky styling aside, the prototype drivetrain is more interesting. Under the bonnet is a turbocharged 1.4-litre TFSI engine developing 150 hp and 240 Nm of torque, mated to a front-wheel-drive platform and an S tronic dual-clutch transmission. A 20 kW electric motor delivers an additional 27 hp and an extra 150 Nm of torque when the vehicle is accelerating. Acceleration is highest during the boosting phase, which is when the TFSI engine and electric motor operate simultaneously, giving a total of 390 Nm.

Concept features include an ESP-controlled active front differential lock to reduce torque steer due to the front-driven setup, as well as magnetic adjustable shocks, 18-inch wheels, Audi’s useless MMI multimedia system, navigation and a futuristic interior that won’t make it to production.

The electric motor is apparently capable of powering the vehicle alone using lithium-ion batteries, giving the A1 a range of up to 100 km in pure electric mode. The motor can be recharged from any power socket. The automatic start/stop facility, energy regeneration and phases of purely electrical operation reduce the fuel consumption and emissions by almost 30 percent compared to when it is running on the combustion engine alone. Audi says 0-100 kph acceleration happens in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 200 kph, with a fanciful fuel-consumption claim of only 3.9 litres per 100 km. We’ll believe it when we see it.

Audi Hybrid and More Coming by 2015

In an effort to increase its market share, Audi will boost spending and invest a total of $10.5 billion in new products and future technologies between now and 2012. According to a recent statement issued by the German luxury automaker, that investment includes a hybrid version of the Q5 SUV for 2011. When it’s officially unveiled sometime in 2010, the Q5 will be Audi’s first full hybrid vehicle.

Autoblog says the Q5 “should make a good first hybrid – especially as its size will enable Audi engineers to more easily fit an electric motor and a battery pack into its CUV proportions. Further, the Q5's somewhat hefty price tag might help hide some of the added cost associated with a hybrid powertrain.”

In addition to the Q5 Hybrid, Audi plans to launch several new models beginning next year. These will include the A1 compact, A7 hatchback, A8 and R8 Spyder. Motor Authority comments, “This means a slew of new Audi products are heading for dealerships, even though certain commentators might be convinced that the brand has already covered almost every niche.”

BusinessWeek says, “Audi, which ranks third behind BMW and Daimler's (DAI) Mercedes-Benz brand, will increase its lineup of cars and sport-utility vehicles to 42 models by 2015 from 34 now.”

Although previous reports pointed that the launch of the Audi A1 will be this autumn
it appears that the German manufacturer will launch its new hatchback next year at the Geneva Motor Show, says Car Magazine.

The A1 will be the first rival for the Mini Cooper developed by Audi and according to Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi AG board member for sales and marketing, the upcoming car will look almost exactly like the A1 concepts (the Metroproject Quattro and A1 Sportback - shown in the photo gallery). The first version which will be built by Audi will be the three-door version but our sources point at a five-door A1 Sportback, an A1-based SUV to take on the upcoming Mini Crossover and a convertible.

Today, proving our assumptions right and themselves totally incapable of convincingly playing coy, Audi has finally dispensed with the subterfuge and officially confirmed that the Audi e-tron concept is slated for production.

Initially unveiled last month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, no hints were given about the e-tron concept’s production potential until a few weeks after its debut when Audi introduced the Vertical Run video game for PS3, featuring the e-tron concept on center stage. When explaining the motivation behind the game, Audi marketing directors stressed the importance of reaching out to the new, digital generation, which would have been largely a waste of money had Audi intended to keep the e-tron in the concept garage but will ultimately prove to be a very strategic move. According to Audi of America president Johan de Nysschen, a completely production-ready model of the e-tron won’t be ready until at least 2012 but “running samples” could hit showrooms as early as 2011.

Judging by the amount of energy Audi has devoted to promoting the e-tron in its current form, its likely the production version will differ very little from the concept. If such is the case, the 2012 Audi e-tron will bear a heavy resemblance to the R8 but, like the concept, will only measure just slightly larger than the TT. Power will be source to four electric motors and a lithium ion battery back that together will crank out power roughly equivalent to 313-horsepower and a rubber-burning 3,319 lb-ft of torque.

Given its supercar specs and the fact that EV technology still doesn’t come cheap, don’t expect the e-tron to offer up the poor man’s version of the Tesla Roadster. Prices will likely fall in the 6-figure range and barring any extraordinary developments in the lithium ion battery industry, initial production quantities will likely be very limited.

In direct contrast to the reports published in February, it now appears as those Audi has given the compact A1’s North American debut the green light. Initially, Audi expressed doubts over the success of a mini-sized car with a full-sized price tag, but a rather dramatic shift in the market has apparently quelled those fears. Now, sources are claiming that the Audi A1 will be washing up on U.S. shores as early as 2011, just in time to take on both an expanding MINI Cooper line and its sister, the impending BMW 0 Series.

Accordingly, the A1 will be offered in both 3- and 5-door body styles, with an A1 SUV rumored as a possible later entrant to compete with the MINI Crossover. Specifics regarding the powertrain are also similarly sparse but if the MINI is indeed the A1’s target we expect power to be comparable.

The Audi Q7 gets a midcycle freshening, with modest enhancements inside and out, for model-year 2010. The large crossover will officially debut next week at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show.

The exterior styling changes are minimal: redesigned grille and bumpers, LED turn signals and daytime running lights, four new paint colors and new 18-inch alloy wheels. An optional aluminum exterior package includes chrome bars in the bumpers and door moldings, as well as body-color lower bumpers and contrasting-color front apron and diffuser.

The Q7 3.0 TDI will continue for model-year 2010. In the U.S. market, Audi also will still offer two gasoline engines, the 276-horsepower 3.6 FSI V6 and the 345-hp 4.2 FSI V8, in the 2010 Q7, which goes on sale in October.

Audi announced today that its latest A4 2.0 TDI e will be available starting in early June. The new vehicle is equipped with 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine connected to a 6-speed manual transmission and delivers an impressive fuel consumption: 4.6 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (51.13 miles per U.S. gallon).

It consequently emits a mere 119 grams of CO2 per kilometer (191.51 grams per mile), which according to the manufacturer it is the best value of any vehicle in its class. The ‘e’ model has 136 bhp (100 kW) and sprints from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.5 seconds while the top speed is limited at 215 km/h (133 mph)

Audi A8 Gets a Few Updates

For the 2008 model year Audi has updated many components of its flagship sedan, although you probably won't notice most of them. First the A8 is going to be offered with the 2.8L FSI six-cylinder engine (Europe) that will put out 210 hp and achieve 28mpg.

The revised A8 also receives a revised air suspension and more direct steering. Audi is also working on an alert system that will alert drivers when another vehicle is in their blind spots and if the driver starts to drift in an out of the lanes on a freeway.

Styling has been slightly updated on the 08' version. The single-frame grille has been updated, turn signals have been added to the mirrors and the taillights have been revised

The current generation Audi A8 or otherwise coded the D3 has been with us since 2003. Only receiving a few minimal facelifts, it’s rivals, the Mercedes S-Class, Lexus LS, BMW 7-Series and everything that falls within the same category have all but moved on past facelifts and onto new models already. That’s a fact but the truth is, the design will have to stay on for at least another two years as the next generation ‘D4′ A8 isn’t due to arrive until 2010. A prototype has been spotted undergoing cold weather testing while hidden under the current D3 body. The first give away was that it was odd to see an almost obsolete model undergoing testing at such a late stage in its life cycle, and that it needed extended fender flares, a stretched wheelbase and wider track, what other visual cues could a trained eye need?

The A8 will use an extended version of the modular platform used in the A4 but predictably will be built using more exclusive and exotic materials such as aluminum and magnesium to save weight and improve dynamics. The engine line up will very likely be the same as the current range, starting with the 2.8 liter petrol onto the middle class 4.2 liter V8 FSI and Audi’s all new 6 liter V12 TDI to top the segment.

There will also be other units depending on country and demand and this will include superchagred units as well as an increased application of Audi’s latest valve-lift system. Those passionate about motor engineering might not be too happy but Audi’s 6 liter W12 engine is reportedly being phased out due to its high costs and emissions. Expect the base model to retain its FWD layout but All-Wheel-Drive variants will feature later on with Audi’s latest Quattro torque vectoring systems, which distribute drive individually between each axle and between the rear wheels for improved traction and stability.

Even with just the unofficial photos, people have already begun to express their rants and raves for the recent unit. Some like it. Some don’t. The alleged additional four inches to the car’s body has mixed reviews so far. Some find it necessary to have enough space for the diesel V12. Others just don’t like the look when it’s four inches wider.

Have we really found the 2010 Audi A8? As far as the company’s concerned, these are yet to become official.

Audi unveiled the Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI quattro yesterday ahead of its official unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show next month. Now the first photos of the R8 V10 in red have been released.

The Audi R8 V10 is powered by a Lamborghini-sourced 5.2L V10 engine that puts out 525 horsepower and propels the car from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 196 mph. The V10 engine is mated to either a a 6-speed manual or R-Tronic semi-automatic.

World's largest Audi centre opens

The world's largest Audi car showroom will open in London next Monday, October 19.

Located next to the M4, Audi West London has three showroom floors, making it possible for drivers on the motorway to see displays inside the centre.

The dealership will have space for 116 cars, a 32-car workshop in the basement and a two-storey exhibitions and conference centre.

Innovative design
Designed by Wilkinson Eyre, the same company that created the Millennium Bridge in Gateshead, the architecture of Audi's new centre takes inspiration from themes including the manta ray fish and the wings of a B2 stealth bomber.

The one-tonne aluminium sculpture that dominated Audi's display at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed is suspended in a purpose-built atrium within the centre.

The showroom cost £45 million to build and up to 30,000 customers a year are expected to use it.

Audi estimates that it will sell around 700 cars from its new London showroom in the next 12 months.

AUDI rolled out the long-awaited open top version of its lightweight, mid-engine R8 Spyder when the company opened the doors on the German firm's new flagship showrooms in London.

Based on the 525PS, 5.2-litre FSI model but with a bespoke body featuring extra weight-saving carbon fibre composite panels, Audi's new star car is expected to start reaching UK customers early next year.

Priced from £109,580, the quattro-drive supercar has a soft-top hood that can be lowered and raised at the touch of a button in 19 seconds at speeds under 31mph.

When lowering, it folds like a Z under the automatic cover of its storage compartment above the 10-cylinder engine.

Standard equipment includes all-LED headlights - a world first for Audi in the R8 V10 - an extended leather interior package, heated seats, DVD satellite navigation and unique new seatbelt-mounted microphones which make it possible to talk on the phone even with the top down on the motorway.

Like its Coupe relative, the Spyder delivers uncompromising performance from a largely hand-built motor which develops 530Nm torque and spins freely to its 8,700rpm limit to take the car to 62mph from rest in 4.1 seconds and go on to a top speed of 194mph.

The tuning company B&B, based in Siegen (Germany) refined the new Audi Q7 Facelift. Actually, they created a real monster, which has 595ps and 1270Nm of torque under the bonet, developed by 6.0 litre V12 Turbo diesel engine.

The engine tuning has two stages. First – an increase of the boost pressure of 0.2bar, which costs 2.498 EURO and the second stage includes changes to the suction pipe, airflow and air cooling system and modifications to the unit-injector element. With rebalancing the ECU software of the SUV the power reaches 595hp and 1270Nm, really an amazing results for diesel engine. Stage one for the V12 TDI costs 2.498 EURO and the stage two is 7.950 EURO.

The company B&B also offers two tuning stages for Audi Q7 4.2TDI. At the Stage one the results are 375 hp and 850 Nm of torque and the stage two reaches 400 hp and 900 Nm of torque. The first stage costs only 1.698 EURO and the seconds is much more expensive EUR 4.950 .

There are three tuning stages available for Q7 3.0TDI. First one is increase of the boost pressure of 0.15 bar, priced at 1.398 EURO to reach 280 hp and 585 Nm. Stage two costs only a hundred more – 1.498 EURO and the results are much better 300 hp and 600 Nm. The maximum output power of 3.0 litre TDI engine comes with stages three. The engine reaches 325 hp and a maximum torque of 640 Nm.

The company offers special B&B alloy rims for the Audi Q7 – 20”, 22” and 23” are available in the option list.

There is also a optimization of the air-chassis, which can be lowered by 50mm, this will cost you another 985 EURO.

The aerodinamyc package from B&B includes: front and rear skirt, fender enlargements and roof spoiler. The price is 3.498 EURO.

Rs 38-lakh Audi lifted outside Saket mall

New Delhi In a carjacking incident that has left the South district police in a tizzy, a South Delhi-based exporter’s Audi car was robbed from outside Select Citywalk mall in Saket. Police sources said the driver was taken along with the car at the point of a knife and later pushed out near Sonepat. The incident was reported just past midnight, Sunday.

An Audi costs approximately Rs 38 lakh in the Indian market.

According to police sources, exporter Diwan Wadhwa’s daughter had gone to the mall, and the car was parked outside with the the driver in it. Wadhwa lives in Pushpanjali farmhouse, in Brijwasan, near the airport.

Not all news out of the Detroit auto show is green, where it seems absolutely everyone is showing off a hybrid or an EV or a car that runs on sunshine and smiles. Some of the news is red. Really red.

Audi burned retinas when it pulled the sheet off its stunning R8 FSI, which is basically a Lamborghini Gallardo drivetrain wrapped in R8 awesomeness. Normally it would be the reverse (viz; Pagani), and this orientation might cause some consternation, but to our eye it works. It's sexy as hell and you simply cannot argue with a V10 engine putting down 525 horsepower through all-wheel drive.
